On Monday, September 14, the Diario Oficial de la Federación — Mexico's official gazette — carried a notice with no player names, no scoreline, no line-up. Just one file number: IO-001-2026. The national antitrust authority has opened a file to review the affiliation, organisation and access conditions of federated professional football.

I read it three times. Eighteen months ago, in a commentary booth in Nha Trang, I drew a heat map for a match in which both teams had nothing left to play for. Pressing intensity dropped before the coach changed shape. A heat map does not lie, but it tells only half the story; the other half lives in the gaps. Why the gap between two divisions matters so much
