Honda Center Chosen as Volleyball Rehearsal for the 2028 Olympics: What Is Really Being Tested

On the floor of the Honda Center in Anaheim, beneath the wood of the basketball court and above the cooled concrete of the ice rink, there is an empty space almost nobody sees. The arena is home to the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League, and on most winter nights its stands glow orange and black. One year before the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics open, the organisers picked this building as the rehearsal venue for volleyball.

No roster was announced. No tactical diagram was drawn. There is only a venue, a format, a broadcast footprint and a qualification mechanism.

Stadium corridors taught me that a match truly begins behind the studio door, at the scheduling spreadsheet, at the floor rental contract, at the question of who holds the broadcast rights. A venue announcement reads dry, but it is the infrastructure for every rally played three years later.

Context: an announcement with no match data

The Honda Center seats roughly 18,000 in its hockey configuration and can go past 19,000 in a centre-court layout. It is a genuine multi-purpose building: in a single week it can be an ice rink, a basketball court, a concert hall and then a volleyball court.

What was released belongs to event logistics: venue, format, broadcast coverage and the route to an Olympic berth. Attached to it is one strategy-adjacent point, namely that the Honda Center will serve as a rehearsal environment for the Olympic volleyball tournament in 2028.

In my own working table I filled the key-data column with a single line: none. No spike efficiency, no blocking index, no reception percentage, no head-to-head history. The entire technical layer is absent, and that absence is itself a fact.

How a multi-purpose arena shapes a rally

Under the Honda Center floor sits the ice plant. When the building converts to volleyball, crews lay insulation before the playing surface goes down. But temperature and humidity in an arena of this type are never fully neutral: the chillers keep running to stop the concrete slab from cracking, and cold air at court level pulls humidity down.

Low humidity makes the ball travel faster, lets a float serve hold its line with less drag, and makes the ball slip off the hands more easily. Nothing in the announcement mentions this. Yet it is the kind of detail a libero feels inside the first set.

Ceiling height is another variable. A high roof helps the receiver track a serve; a low roof helps the server. Hockey arenas have high roofs and large lighting rigs, which usually produce even brightness, something volleyball needs so players can follow the ball through dark patches. But those same rigs create blind spots when the ball drops vertically. That is a design problem, not a human one.

Then there is the broadcast window, the part Vietnamese fans should read slowly.

Volleyball's audience centre of gravity sits in Asia and Europe. A match in Anaheim tipping off at 7pm Pacific would air at roughly 10am Beijing time and 9am Hanoi time. For sports television, that is a far better slot than the 3am window Vietnamese viewers have long tolerated for European competitions. LA28 has a practical reason to push volleyball into the American morning: it is selling television rights to Asia.

On qualification, the Olympic format still runs through three routes: the host nation berth, the continental qualifier and the world ranking. The 2027 event at the Honda Center is a points opportunity and, at the same time, a chance to test athlete eligibility checks, entry processing and the operation of the international anti-doping system inside a building that is not a dedicated volleyball venue.

For Vietnam's women's national team, this is a long-horizon story. The side sits in the group that must go through continental qualification and accumulate world ranking points. Players such as Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen have shown that the physical gap can be narrowed through the right international competition path. Thuy spent a season in Japan's domestic league, and every overseas contract like that brings home lessons about training intensity, recovery and reading opponents on video, none of which appear in any venue bulletin.

The counterintuitive angle: what a rehearsal actually tests

People use the word rehearsal as though it describes a large-scale tactical session. It does not. A rehearsal event tests buttons, not people.

More precisely, it measures the floor conversion time from a hockey configuration to volleyball, the spectator flow through the ticket gates, the camera system serving video review, the signal path from the control room out to dozens of broadcasters. If any one of those links fails in 2028, the consequence lands not on the scoreboard but on trust.

The blind spot lies elsewhere. Choosing a privately owned California arena as the focal point for a sport whose audience centre sits in Asia raises questions about ticket pricing and about the actual presence of local spectators. In the United States, women's college volleyball draws well, but men's indoor volleyball is nearly invisible on national television. An 18,000-seat building filled to capacity is an assumption, not a conclusion.

There is an occupational risk I have met often enough to name. When a sports event is built around infrastructure, organisers readily believe that good infrastructure will generate its own pull. Six years in the trade taught me the opposite. The empty stands of 2026 did not mean the match was soulless; they meant the song needed to be sung louder, and singing louder requires singers, not more speakers.

A thought worth keeping

A match is only the final layer of script, and behind it lie countless layers of life that no camera is wide enough to capture. A venue announcement for the 2028 Olympics, read in Hanoi, sounds distant. But what it measures is the professionalisation speed of an entire sport: the ability to turn an ice rink into a volleyball court in a few hours, to sell an American morning slot to Asian viewers, to turn an Olympic berth into a goal with a roadmap.

The question I keep asking myself, and want to put back to everyone working in Vietnamese volleyball, is this: are we preparing to be invited into arenas like that one, or only preparing to sit and watch others play in them.
